Cairo : Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa today said he would present a detailed report to Arab foreign ministers, due to meet in Cairo Jan 27 2008, about developments in Palestinian territories in the wake of the UN Security Council’s (UNSC) failure to agree on a resolution on Gaza.
Moussa said he received a report from the Arab League mission to the UN which highlighted “dangerous pressure” exercised against the Arab group in New York over a draft UN resolution about the developments in Gaza.
Hesham Yusuf, director of Moussa’s office, said the foreign ministers would hold a special session to discuss the situations in the occupied Palestinian territories and the Israeli policies against the Palestinians, in addition to how to deal with the Israeli siege on the Palestinians.
Egypt’s decision to open the Rafah crossing was an important step and was welcomed by the Arab countries, said Yusuf, citing that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak who said Cairo could not let the Palestinian people be exposed to the Israeli hostile policy.
Yusuf also said that Moussa would brief the foreign ministers about his visits to Beirut and Damascus in yet another bid to resolve the Lebanese presidential standoff.
He added the situation in Lebanon has reached a “very dangerous stage” and it was thus important to exert maximum efforts to address it.The bombings in Beirut are negatively affecting the situation in Lebanon in general, he said.
