Residents can get a copy of the “environmental friendly, smokeless firecracker CD,” which has recorded the explosion of firecrackers, from the Taipei City government, or have it mailed to one’s home.

Taipei bans setting off firecrackers at public places within 50 metres of schools, or causing noise pollution by exploding firecrackers.

The Chinese New Year holidays, also called the Spring Festival, begin on Feb 6. It is a time for family reunion, visiting friends and exchanging gifts.

Chinese people set off firecrackers in a popular belief that it would scare away evil spirits so that they could have peace in the new year.
