“The equipment will greatly enhance the capability of the security apparatus to pre-empt suicide bombings,” interior ministry spokesperson Javed Iqbal Cheema told a weekly press briefing.

Cheema said that the government is purchasing scanners for deployment at provincial entry points, main roads as well as entry and exit points of main cities.

He said that provincial governments had been asked to provide foolproof security to all political leaders and show zero tolerance of brandishing of weapons.

“They have also been asked to take strict actions against those spreading hate materials,” Cheema said.

Pakistan is facing the threat of suicide bombings as more than 400 people, mostly security personnel, were killed in suicide bombings last year, according to official statistics. Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was also killed in a firing and suicide bombing attack in the garrison city of Rawalpindi Dec 27.
