All students were from the region where the company proposes to set up a $12-billion steel plant. The project is mired in controversy as the local communities have been opposing acquisition of their lands for the steel plant.

Ten meritorious students were given Rs.20,000 ($500) each while 18 students from economically poor background were given scholarships worth Rs.10,000 ($250) each.

Uma Ballav Pattnaik, the executive director of Posco-India, handed out the scholarships – named Posco TJ Park Foundation scholarship – at a function in the coastal district of Jagatsinghpur, around 120 km from here.

Earlier in December 2007, the company had given scholarships to 29 students from prominent universities in Orissa.

Posco TJ Park Foundation is an independent and non-profit organisation fully funded and supported by Posco, South Korea.
