Islamabad : U. S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Mr. Richard A. Boucher, called on President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday and discussed Pakistan-U. S. relations, counter-terrorism cooperation and regional developments of mutual interest.
The President underscored the importance of multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and the United States, the Foreign Ministry said.
Mr Boucher arrived in Pakistan on three-day visit on Monday and has also met prime minister, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and advisors on Interior and national security.
“The President underlined the need for deepening of cooperation in the agreed areas of economy, energy, education, and science & technology,” a ministry statement said.
The President also underscored the need for enhanced market access for Pakistan’s products in the U.S.
President Musharraf reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to fighting extremism and terrorism highlighting the elements of the three-pronged counter-terrorism strategy.
Boucher expressed U.S. commitment to a strong, broad-based relationship with Pakistan, according to the statement.
“He also appreciated the Government’s efforts to address extremism and terrorism and expressed U.S. support for economic and social development of Pakistan”.
