Jordan, Egypt call for dialogue among Palestinians

Cairo : Jordanian King Abdullah II and President Hosni Mubarak have affirmed their support for the national dialogue initiative set Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Spokesman for the Egyptian presidency, Ambassador Suleiman Awad told the press here that the mini Egyptian-Jordanian summit held in Sharm El-Sheikh Wednesday was very important for peace in the Middle East, adding that leaders of both nations stressed the the Lebanese political powers should abide by the Doha accord.

King Abdullah II and Mubarak hoped that Lebanon would speed efforts to form its government under the leadership of President Michel Suleiman, said Awad.

Awad affirmed that Cairo and Amman were following developments in the Palestinian territories, focusing on efforts to hold inter-Palestinian talks in Egypt.

Regarding Egypt’s evaluation of the Hamas-Israel truce, Awad said that the truce, which is entering its third week, was positive in general, hoping that both sides would observe the agreement to refrain from hostile acts.

The truce would lift the siege over the Gaza Strip and would allow the opening of crossings, affirmed the Egyptian official, revealing that his country has allowed 200 Palestinians to enter Egypt through the Rafah crossing.
