Cuba Ahead in Democracy, Spain Mayor

Havana : Cuba represents the most advanced democracy of the world, with full freedom and sovereignty, said Jose Antonio Barroso, mayor of Villa Real, located in the Spanish province of Cadiz in this capital Saturday.

Barroso traveled to Cuba leading his country”s delegation that attended activities in occasion of the 110th anniversary of naval battle took place in Santiago de Cuba by the US intervention in the war carried out by the island against the Spanish domain.

That incident, which marked the defeat of the Iberian country fleet, also gave examples of the US direct interference to frustrate in that moment the Cuban military victory in its extensive war for independence.

The Spanish mayor took part of the commemorative symposium of that battle, accompanied by General Jose Cervera y Pascual, and Angel Luis y Pacual, both great-grandsons of Admiral Pascual Cervera, who was a chief of the then defeated Spanish squadron.

Other activities here were meetings with Sugar Industry Minister Ulises Rosales del Toro, as well as officials from other central organizations and the Peoples” Power National Assembly. As a proposal of the so-called Spanish State Meeting of Solidarity with the Five, a vigil of protest in front of all US embassies have been convened for September 12, date that will mark the 10th anniversary of their imprisonment.
