The scene in the the worst-hit Dehmaji and Lakhimpur districts, however, remained critical for the fifth day today as rail and road communication was snapped following breach of banks by river Ranganadi, official sources said.

Rivers Gai and Jiadhol alongwith Ranganadi had inundated vast tracts of habitation and cropland.

Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Dibrugarh, Nematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri as were River Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, Jia Bharali at Sonitpur and Beki at Barpeta.

The Central Water Commission has issued an official warning that the Brahmaputra may cross the danger level in the city and in lower Assam areas following downpour in the river’s upper reaches.

Brahmaputra was flowing above the warning level and rising alarmingly at Tezpur, the Burdihing at Khowang in Dibrugarh, Subansiri at Badatighat in Lakhimpur, Dikhow and Desang at Sibsagar, Puthimari at Kamrup and Sankosh at Golokgunj in Dhubri.

The second spell of floods has so far affected a population of more than five lakh people.
