Kozhikode : The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will not withdraw its minister from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over the India-US nuclear deal, Senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran said here Tuesday.
“In the current circumstances I presume that the Muslim League won’t contemplate such a step which is against the national interest,” Karunakaran said.
There was speculation that the IUML may pull out Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed from the ministry following its views on the India-US nuclear deal.
Karunakaran predicted the UPA government would win the vote of confidence in parliament July 22.
On a personal visit here, Karunakaran met his estranged son K. Muralidharan, the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), after a gap of seven months.
Karunakaran, who floated his own Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran in 2005, merged it with the NCP but then rejoined the Congress without Muralidharan last December.
“We did not discuss any politics at the meeting,” Karunakaran told reporters.
