Karzai dismisses top official after election announcement

Kabul : Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday dismissed a top official after his announcement of participation in the upcoming presidential elections. Abdul Jabbar Sabit, Attorney General of Afghanistan, had announced on Tuesday that he would be a candidate for the upcoming presidential polls. In a statement released from the Presidential Palace here, President Karzai said Sabit’s announcement regarding his participation in election is his resignation from the post of Attorney General.

However, Sabit said he did not resign and was dismissed by the president. A lawyer by profession, Sabit was trained in the United States. He was appointed Attorney General of Afghanistan by President Hamid Karzai about two years back. Soon after his appointment to one of the top governmental positions, Sabit declared war against corruption. He dismissed several provincial officials for their involvement in corruption during his two years in office. President Hamid Karzai and several others have already declared their candidature for the presidential elections scheduled to be held in 2009.
