A statement by the Turkish Army stressed that 11 militants were killed during army confrontations with the banned organization of the PKK in Hakkari governorate, adjacent to Iraq two weeks ago.

The statement added that the number of deaths in the PKK during the last five days hit 33 rebels.

The fighting is part of a Turkish army military campaign inside the country since the end of its intensive ground operations against the militants in northern Iraq of last February. The PKK is considered by Turkey, U.S and the European Union as a terrorist organization. The PKK calls for the independence of Turk-majority south eastern Anatolia. The conflict led to the death of more than 40,000 people.
