“It is our endeavour to make Chandigarh a safe place even during nights. All the night checking points are properly manned by inspectors, senior police officials and traffic marshals,” S.S. Srivastava, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Chandigarh, told IANS.

“Our pivotal aim is to curb night crimes and drunken driving on city roads,” Srivastava said.

Policemen from all the 11 police stations of the city and paramilitary officials were deployed in two shifts from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. and from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. at various points in Chandigarh Friday night.

“We checked vehicles and questioned suspicious people,” said a police official.

“During the checking 241 vehicles were fined for traffic violations and 13 vehicles were impounded and six people booked for various offences,” the official said.

The police have identified 38 places for special checks keeping in view the security arrangements for forthcoming Independence Day celebrations in the city, added the police official.
