Afghan forces kill militants in S Afghanistan

Kabul : Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) backed by the U.S.-led Coalition forces on Friday killed several militants and arrested more than a dozen during an operation to disrupt militant activity in southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, said a Coalition statement released here on Sunday.

A large cache of artillery rounds, grenade fuses, and small arms ammunition were discovered and destroyed on the scene, the statement said.

No Coalition forces, ANSF or civilian casualties were reported, it added.

Meanwhile, Afghan army and U.S. forces on Thursday rescued 16 Afghan men named kidnapped and jailed by Taliban militants in the village of Parmakan in the western Afghanistan’s Herat province possibly months ago.

The joint troops were searching a compound where Taliban commander Nangialia Khan was known to have been and discovered a building the Taliban had been using as a jail, said a Coalition statement.

Hostages were found and released on the spot, it added.

Afghanistan has witnessed a surge of violence and riot throughout the south to east over the past one month while militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people including over 700 civilians so far this year.
