Kozhikode : The Kerala unit of Congress party Wednesday praised the Indian Union Muslim League’s (IUML) support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government’s confidence motion, saying the League helped the country uphold its prestige.
“Muslim League took a strong decision for the country’s development,” state Congress chief Ramesh Chennithala told reporters here.
He said it was unfortunate that the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) propagated the notion that the India-US civil nuclear deal was anti-Muslim.
“When two countries make a deal, it is always made in the interest of the nation. The move to communalise such a deal is against secular ideals,” he said.
Chennithala said the UPA was formed to protect the secular ideals of the country. The CPI-M joining hands with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to topple the UPA government will only undermine its credibility.
He accused the CPI-M of subserving Chinese interests by their opposition to the government move to sign the nuclear deal.
Chennithala said that most of the Muslim legislators in parliament had voted in favour of the nuclear deal. “Most of the Muslim organisations in the country are also in favour of the deal.”
He said if the US attacks Iran, Congress party will be the first to oppose it.
Earlier, Chennithala visited the IUML’s state office here which was damaged in stone pelting early Wednesday morning by miscreants, alleged to be the activists of DYFI (the youth wing of CPI-M).
“The home minister is giving green signal to the violence by DYFI. If the government does not put down the violence it will lead to serious consequences,” he added.
Kerala has reported a number of minor attacks on IUML and Congress offices after a schoolteacher died Saturday (July 19) during the agitation against a controversial school textbook by opposition activists in Malappuram district.
