Hours after a string of bomb attacks killed over 40 people in Ahmedabad, police Saturday night found a bomb placed in a wooden crate opposite the Nupur Hospital. It was taken away for analysis.

Police said it was found to have a wire, some white powder, nuts and bolts as well as a battery — all ingredients for a crude explosive.

Surat Police Commissioner R.M.S. Brar refused to go into the details. “I will not comment on it as the experts are still analysing it,” he said.

But a suspicious bag recovered from the Surat railway station Sunday was found to contain some old clothes. Its discovery had caused panic.

The civil hospital in Surat too was checked with a fine toothcomb at night and all waste disposal bins were emptied. Police presence has been beefed up in the hospital premises.

This followed the targeting of the civil hospital in Ahmedabad Saturday, when a string of bomb blasts across the city killed around 40 people and injured about 100.

Brar has ordered all cinema houses in Surat to remain closed Sunday and asked people to remain indoors.

Police said that many unclaimed two-wheelers and cars were found parked in the city and these were being checked.
