Chandigarh : International environment NGO Greenpeace conducted a campaign here Wednesday, asking people to sign a declaration that urges the government to make it mandatory for automobile manufacturers to produce only fuel-efficient cars.
As part of their worldwide ‘Save Climate Campaign’, Greenpeace activists got people to sign the declaration at Sector-17 here.
“Chandigarh is the last place where this campaign is being conducted. We have already got this declaration filled out by people in major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore,” Pankaj Kumar, Chandigarh coordinator of Greenpeace, told IANS.
“We will send all the copies of the declaration to the concerned ministry and persuade them to devise a law for car manufacturers in India to produce only fuel efficient cars,” he said.
Kumar stressed that fuel efficient cars were the need of the hour as “we are importing 68 percent of the crude oil that we use and going by the pace, we will have to import 94 percent of crude oil by 2020”.
He added that the government should also make it mandatory for manufacturers to make cars that emit only 80 gm of carbon dioxide per kilometre as compared to the ones now that emit 180 gm of carbon dioxide per km.
