Six millitants killed in Kashmir

Srinagar : Four Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) guerrillas were among six militants killed in three separate gun-battles with security forces in the Kashmir Valley Monday.

The police said two top Harkat-ul-Mujaheedin (HuM) militants, identified as Rahimullah and Chotta Sajad, were gunned down by the troops of 57 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the police in a joint operation at Vijhara in Bandipore district, 57 km from here.

“Security forces surrounded the village in the (Monday) afternoon and the militants opened fire at the troops. The fire was returned, and in the heavy firing the two militants of HuM were killed,” a senior police officer said.

He said, “Two houses were destroyed in the gunfight that ended in the (Monday) evening.”

The police said four guerrillas of LeT were also killed in two gunfights in Handwara and Wattergam villages in north Kashmir.

Meanwhile, militants tossed a hand grenade at a passing vehicle of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Kangan on the Srinagar-Amarnath shrine route. However, no one was reported injured in the explosion.

The annual two-month long religious march starts June 18. No group has claimed responsibility for the grenade attack.
