Dubai : Charges against Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Asif, who was detained at the Dubai International Airport for allegedly possessing drugs, have been dropped and he will be leaving for his country by the next flight out of here.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ahsan Ullah Khan told the Dawn newspaper in Abu Dhabi that the cricketer would be released soon and would take the first available flight for Pakistan.
Khan said Asif was detained “because of some misunderstanding which had been cleared”.
The cricketer was detained by customs authorities at the Dubai airport Sunday while he was on his way to Lahore from Mumbai via Dubai.
He was returning after playing for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL) semifinal against Rajasthan Royals in Mumbai Friday.
