Ancelotti, the AC Milan coach, is understood not to have been part of talks, and it is far from clear whether the Italian club would allow their manager to leave without a fight.

In seven years at the San Siro, Ancelotti led Milan to one Serie A title and two Champions League triumphs since taking over in 2001.

A Chelsea statement said: “Contrary to reports Chelsea Football Club has not reached agreement with any individual to become manager, nor have we sought permission from any organisation to talk to their manager.

“We are extremely happy with how our search is progressing.”
