Suicide car bomb targets foreign military patrol in S Afghanistan

Kabul : A suicide bomber driving a car exploded himself near a foreign military patrol convoy Wednesday morning in Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan, causing no casualty to the force but leaving one child dead, a police official said.

The blast occurred near Spinboldak town on a highway linking to the provincial capital Kandahar city as a Canadian troops convoy were patrolling, Abdul Razeq, border police chief in Spinboldak district, told Xinhua.

A child wounded in the explosion later succumbed to his injuries, he said.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility yet.

A Canadian soldier was killed Tuesday during a gun battle with Afghan militants in Panjwai district of the same province, Canada’s Defense Ministry said.

There are currently 2,500 Canadian soldiers stationed in southern Afghanistan.

The past two weeks saw a sharp increase of bombings across Afghanistan, where last year recorded as many as over 140 deadly suicide blast attacks.
