At a plenary session of the three-day Global Summit of Women, which opened here on Thursday, Zhao said in 2000, only 17 percent of women in GfK worldwide survey said they had used the Internet in the past 30 days. The number rose to the present 49 percent.

She noted that the number of developed Asian women using the Internet has risen from 18 percent in 2000 to the present 64 percent, representing one of the leading regions in the world.

In developing Asia, the number of women using the Internet has increased from 7 percent in 2000 to 34 percent now.

Although the level is still lower in developing Asia, it is almost a five-fold increase, she added.

In developing Asia, only 10 percent of women in their 50s or older use the Internet, that number rises to 45 percent for women in their 30s, and 57 percent for women in their 20s, according to Zhao.

The ongoing GSW 2008 from June 5-7 will explore two of the major forces that will impact the 21st century global marketplace — women and the Asia-Pacific economies.

The three-day event was attended by nearly 900 participants from about 70 countries and regions.
