Kolkata : Giving relief to the people suffering from back-to-back shutdowns in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Friday asked her party workers not to disrupt long-distance trains and allow shops to open after 4.30 p.m., one and a half hours before the scheduled end of her party’s protest against fuel price hikes.
The Trinamool Congress had originally called a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. shutdown, the same as the state’s ruling Left Front did Thursday.
“All long-distance transport can function and business and trade activities can also start after 4.30 p.m. Traders can open their shops and I request our party supporters not to cause any trouble to them,” Banerjee told reporters here.
She said: “We are happy only when people can live their lives happily.”
Banerjee took out a march in south Kolkata with posters protesting the hike in fuel prices.
Many trains were cancelled as Trinamool Congress supporters squatted on railway tracks, disrupting rail traffic at many stations.
The IT sector in Salt Lake was kept out of the purview of the shutdown.
