Tehran : Iran’s newly elected parliament speaker Ali Larijani said Saturday that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is wasting time on Iran’s nuclear issue, local English-language Press TV reported.
Larijani made the remarks to reporters upon his arrival in Rasht, capital of the northern Iranian province of Gilan on a day-long visit to discuss provincial issues, according to the report.
“The IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei presented a two-sided report on Iran’s nuclear program. Iran is not interested in prolongation of the issue,” Larijani told the reporters, adding Tehran “does not seek to buy time but is determined to fundamentally settle outstanding issues over its nuclear dossier.”
On May 26, ElBaradei circulated a report simultaneously to the UN Security Council and the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding implementation by Iran of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Safeguards Agreement and the relevant provisions of Security Council Resolutions 1737, 1747 and 1803.
The IAEA report noted that Iran didn’t not offer enough explanation on some problems, especially those ranged over high explosives testing and the missile re-entry vehicle project as well as uranium-related components, according to some earlier media reports.
But Iran said on Thursday that it had given UN investigators more than 200 pages of answers to questions about intelligence reports that it secretly researched how to make atom bombs and declared “the matter is over.”
“We have been honest with the agency. If the IAEA seeks to cause tension in the nuclear case, it will make problems for itself,” Larijani stressed.
