The visit, aimed to mount support for the Paris Conference slated for June 12 in France, is her third trip to the war-battered country.

According to Afghan officials, the US First Lady will call on Afghan President Hamid Karzai and will spend several hours at the Presidential Palace to discuss the situation with the Afghan leader.

Her stay in Afghanistan also includes a visit to the tiny Bamyan province where she will have an aerial view of the two giant Buddha statues which were destroyed by Taliban during the last days of their regime in 2001. Afghan officials say Laura Bush will also visit an orphanage in the country’s central capital Kabul where children orphaned due to war are being kept and educated with the help of donors and NGOs.
