Addressing a mass meeting organized by the Nepali Congress (NC) in Kathmandu Sunday afternoon, Koirala, who is also NC president, said “Our real strength has been the ability to foster mutual understanding, trust and goodwill…Those trying to undermine this strength will be finished in no time.”

He said that republic has been achieved because of consensus among the political forces and that no single party should claim credit for it.

“This is a victory of the Nepali people. No single party has right to make claims for this victory,” he said, adding that he would not compromise with anybody on democracy, freedom of speech, human rights and press freedom at any cost.

Koirala delivered the speech as he was said to be in bad health from the last couple of days. Reports had said his health condition had worsened from Friday night.

The mass meeting was organized to mark the declaration of republic by the Constituent Assembly on May 28.
