Starting Wednesday, all local calls from BSNL post-paid mobile network will cost Re.1 per minute, coming down from Rs.1.20 earlier, while STD calls will be charged at a flat Rs.1.20 within the BSNL network and Rs.1.40 for calls to any other service provider.

“BSNL will now have the cheapest STD rates in the country, as low as 80 paise (two cents) per minute,” its chairman and managing director Kuldeep Goyal said.

The PSU also cut down its fixed line STD call rates by 50 percent. BSNL’s fixed line customers will be able to make STD calls anywhere in the country for a flat Rs.1.20 per minute. The corresponding tariff for the telco’s rural consumer will be 80 paise a minute.

“BSNL was the first company to make breakthroughs in rural India. We will continue to provide cheap call rates for the rural market,” Goyal said.

The company is offering its customers a choice of two BSNL numbers to make local and STD calls at 20 paise and 60 paise per minute, respectively, he said.

The revised roaming rates put BSNL at par with other telcos, offering all outgoing local and incoming calls for Re.1 and outgoing STD and SMS at Rs.1.50 and 50 paise, respectively.
