Tehran : Iranian woman pilgrims entered the Baqi Cemetery in Medina, Saudi Arabia, for the first time on Sunday night in the presence of Chairman of Experts Assembly Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
The Baqi is well-known as graveyard of members of the infallible household of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), including four Imams and the beloved daughter of Prophet Mohammad, Hazrat Zahra (SA).
Women are banned from entering the cemetery.
However, the Iranian woman pilgrims were given permission to enter Baqi as the Saudi King Abdullah bin Abd al-Aziz As-Saud has promised Rafsanjani in a meeting on Sunday to take measures to please the Shia Muslims while they are in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj ritual.
The Iranian pilgrims left the cemetery along with Rafsanjani a few hours after midnight.
Rafsanjani headed for Fadak region located in 250 km from Median at early Monday morning.
The prominent Iranian cleric arrived in Saudi Arabia on June 2 to attend an Islamic interfaith dialogue with the participation of some 500 Muslim dignitaries from more than 50 countries.
