Ramallah : Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Wednesday warned that any Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip could wipe out months of peace negotiations.
“The escalation (of military operation) could destroy all peace efforts that the Israeli and the Palestinian sides have exerted to spread stability in the region,” said Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat.
The Israeli security cabinet will meet Wednesday to discuss whether to accept an Egyptian offer for a ceasefire in Gaza or launch a large-scale offensive into the Hamas-controlled coastal enclave.
Erekat called on the international community “to obligate Israel to stop making destruction and expanding its aggression on the Palestinian people and the Gaza Strip.”
He also urged Israel to take a positive stance regarding the Egyptian efforts that aim at brokering lull in the Gaza Strip.
“We support such a truce because it bears our interest and everyone’s interest,” he added.
Hamas has taken over the Gaza Strip a year ago after routing security forces of President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah.
Egypt has been mediating between the two sides to ease increasing Israeli attacks into Gaza and help reopening crossing points that Israel closed last June.
