“The earth’s crust has developed numerous cracks that are over one foot long and two feet wide. The exact reason behind the cracks is yet to be ascertained,” Hamirpur district magistrate Sameer Verma told IANS on phone.

He added the district administration had sought help from scientists to probe the phenomenon.

A technical team comprising scientists from groundwater and remote sensing departments along with officials of the Geological Survey of India has been called to visit the area, officials said.

Some officials said rampant mining of sand and gravel in the district might have led to the cracks.
