Medvedev to Support Russian Press Abroad

Moscow : President Dmitri Medvedev said on Wednesday it is a moral obligation for Russia to pay attention to problems of Russian media abroad.

At the inauguration of the 10th World Congress of the Russian Press, Medvedev vowed to support projects of social significance and all initiatives to promote national language and culture.

He expressed concern about efforts in some countries to displace Russian journals from media, communication space.

It is a very sensitive question for us, as it concerns the preservation of a vital cultural, information means for an overwhelming majority of fellow country people out of their country of origin.

He also considered important to Russia the emergence of Internet domains in Cyrillic alphabet. “It may seem a serious joke, but it undoubtedly has a special significance for the Russian language,” he stressed.

The most important forum of Russian press started today, attended by nearly 1,000 participants from 65 countries and delegates from local media, with an agenda focused on the international contribution of the Russian language and the Russian-language media.

Medvedev co-presided over the event with president of the World Association of Russian Press, Vitali Ignatenko and UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsura.

The congress, running until June 14 at the World Trade Center in Moscow, is sponsored by ITAR-TASS news agency and WARP.
