“There were six prisoners in the police van – Niroj Gupta, Raju Paswan, Rajesh Prajapati, Raju Saha, Uttam Sardar and Ananda Biswas. Suddenly they attacked each other with blades,” said Kolkata Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Vinet Kumar Goyal.

“In the clash Saha suffered serious injuries in abdomen and has been admitted to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.”

“We don’t know the reason for this sudden clash among prisoners,” he said.

“Generally the prisoners are thoroughly checked before they are produced in court. We still don’t know how these under-trial prisoners managed to carry blades inside the police van.”

“An inquiry has been started against sub-inspector Soren of the Reserve Force (RF) who was escorting the prisoners,” Goyal added.

Two other under-trials, Sardar and Biswas, also suffered minor injuries. According to police sources, the six prisoners were arrested on murder and dacoity charges.
