Kolkata : Small and medium traders are suffering heavy losses in Kolkata as major parts of the city have been waterlogged due to incessant rain Tuesday.
The rain started Sunday due to a depression that originated in the Bay of Bengal. The situation took a turn for the worse Tuesday morning after parts of north, central and south Kolkata were marooned.
Wholesale and retail markets including Shyambazar and New Market were inundated too.
“The rains have spoiled our business. Customers are not coming to our shops due to knee-deep waterlogging. Losses incurred are expected to run in thousands. The Kolkata Corporation is not taking any initiative to pump out the water. We are throwing out water manually and using domestic pumps ourselves,” said Rana Sil, a wholesaler at Shyambazar.
Though no major accidents have taken place so far, a taxi driver was injured after a tree fell on his vehicle at Park Street in south Kolkata.
“A tree was uprooted due to rain and fell on a taxi at Park Street. There were no passengers inside the cab but the driver suffered injuries. The vehicle has been damaged,” officials of Park Street police station said.
According to the officials of Regional Meteorological Centre at Kolkata, the rains will continue Wednesday too.
From Sunday to Tuesday morning there has been 11 centimetres of rainfall here.
