Srinagar : In a step towards the probable re-unification, the two rival groups of the separatist Hurriyat conference Thursday announced the formation of a six-member committee to hammer out differences between them.
“We have agreed to constitute a six-member committee with three members from each group to sort out the differences between us,” hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq told mediapersons here after their marathon five-hour meeting.
Mirwaiz was accompanied by Shabir Shah, another senior leader of the moderate Hurriyat faction, during his meeting with Geelani.
The two groups of the Hurriyat conference also announced they would jointly support the legal committee announced by the Geelani group earlier to explore all legal options against the allotment of 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) by the Jammu and Kashmir government.
The controversial land allotment has become a rallying point for the two groups. The Hurriyat conference split in 2003.
Geelani said both groups would work for creating a greater awareness among the people of Kashmir about the larger consequences of the forest land allotment, which he said had been made under “a conspiracy”.
