New Delhi: The India-US nuclear deal would liberate India from a “technological denial regime”, president of industry lobby Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) Sajjan Jindal said Friday.
Strongly advocating the contentious deal, which would pave the way for nuclear commerce with India, Jindal said in a statement here: “We cannot have a situation where we aspire to become a global economic powerhouse but get bogged down in political ideologies.”
Appealing to all political parties to rise above the party politics in the long-term interest of the nation, Jindal said the signing of the agreement would “truly be liberating India from technology denial regime”.
“The deal not only will help our nuclear power industry but also allow us to source equipment for other types of power plants, related manufacturing applications, fertiliser plants, materials industry, testing, measuring and calibrating, as well as in precision engineering, communications and laser technology,” he said.
“Today, the US is willing to consider such a major initiative because India has emerged as a giant economy, a stable democracy and a responsible nuclear weapons power.”
The agreement, he said, is about a much larger repositioning of India and it is particularly in the interest of Indian corporates to support an initiative that would expand their global opportunities.
“The collective wisdom of the Indian system, including the political leadership, the scientific community, the economic policy makers and the diplomats has finally produced a viable strategy to enable India to overcome historical restrictions and fully access the benefits of global technology. It should be our collective endeavour to ensure that they do not fail on this critical initiative,” Jindal said.
