The suicide bomber tried to drive his explosive-laden car into the al-Khazraj police station in central Mosul late on Tuesday, but he blew it up at the outer entrance of the building, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The powerful blast destroyed a nearby coffee shop along with damaging many other surrounding houses, the source added.

Meanwhile, a U.S. military statement blamed the al-Qaida operatives in Iraq for the attack, which the statement said was caused by a car bomb that wounded up to 90 people.

The province is the scene where the U.S. and Iraqi security forces are conducting a major security crackdown against insurgent groups, including al-Qaida network in Iraq. Nineveh is said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.
