Amsterdam : Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who Wednesday morning left the Dutch embassy in Harare where he has taken refuge, returned to the mission in the afternoon, Dutch news agency ANP reported.
ANP quoted a short interview Tsvangirai gave to American news broadcaster CNN, in which the leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said he was “back in the embassy”.
“I will stay here for as long as necessary,” he added.
The opposition leader left the embassy earlier in the day and gave a press conference, during which he called on the African Union to intervene in the ongoing crisis in Zimbabwe and stop the violence.
He said he would “evaluate the situation and then take a decision” on whether to seek further refuge in the Dutch embassy.
He criticised the media for reporting extensively on his stay in the embassy, accusing them of wanting to bring “sensational” news.
“The location where I am is apparently news, but what happens to the Zimbabweans is not news,” he said.
Tsvangirai sought refuge in the embassy Sunday for his personal safety shortly after declaring he would not be standing in Friday’s runoff presidential election against President Robert Mugabe.
