Vajpayee mourns death of Field Marshal Manekshaw

New Delhi : Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Friday mourned the death of former Indian Army chief Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and described him as a true patriot and a great soldier.

“Manekshaw is remembered as the great hero who led the Indian Army to an important victory in the Bangladesh war of 1971,” Vajpayee said in a statement.

Manekshaw died in a hospital in Wellington in Tamil Nadu early Friday. He was 94.

Manekshaw was the first field marshal of the Indian Army. He was decorated with the Military Cross for gallantry during the second world war.

“In his death, the country has lost a true patriot and a great soldier,” Vajpayee said.
