Pitch battle between police and protestors continued across valley

Srinagar : Massive protest rock summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir continued to over the transfer of forest land to SASB and killings of some civilians allegedly in police firing on the sixth consecutive day today on Saturday.

Today the protests across Kashmir Valley especially in Srinagar which witnessed flood of people on the city roads since morning chanting slogans against PDP and Congress alleging them to have diverted forest land to the Amarnath Board.

Observers believe that the protests are increasing day after day and the protests have spread all over the valley where more than one hundred and fifty people got injured today the 6th consecutive day.

Ever since after 1990, Kashmir has not witnesses such large scale protests even not on the day when alleged fake killing surfaced in Srinagar.

The normal life was thrown completely out of gear in the city and other parts of the valley which observed a complete shut down in protest against the transfer of land to SASB today.

While the shops and other business establishment remained closed, attendance in the government offices remained thin due to the non-plying of commercial vehicles.

Eyewitnesses’ accounts revealed that people throng to street after the people from all parts of the city. Led by various separatist leaders, the people marched on the city roads and chanted slogans against government, security forces and collation government.

The main protest demonstration this morning emerged from Rawalpora, Jamia Masjid Nowhata, Batmalu, Barbarshah, and Nowgam.

In other localities, however, angry protesters burnt tyres and pelted stones at police and paramilitary forces, who resorted to baton charge and used tear gas shells to disperse mobs.

In Maisuma area of city, security forces had a tough time in controlling stone pelting mobs and residents alleged that many people were roughed up.

Chairman Liberation Front Yaseen Mailk, Hurriyat leaders Shabir Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan were also injured in two separate clashes when police resorted to lathicharge and throw tear gas shells on the protesters.

Malik who was critically injured was immediately shifted to hospital and other two Hurriyat leaders were put under house arrest.

Security personnel had to use force including tear gas shells and firing to quell violent protests in many big and small towns including Anantnag, Baramulla, Sopore, Bandipora, Budgam, Kulgam and main areas in Srinagar like Nowshera, Soura, Rainawari, Braripora, Rambagh, Tengpora, Noorbagh and Eidgah.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers opened fire at a mob at Bemina, Batmaloo, Chanpora, down town and other areas of Anantnag, injuring two people. This led to considerable panic and tension in the area.

The protest, however, remained peaceful in some areas and troopers and police observed complete restraint so as to avoid any clash with the people.

Reports revealed that late in the evening when the protestors returned back some angry youth set ablaze a Tata sumo at Batmaloo area of the city.

Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that some protestors pelted stones on security forces at Fateh Kadal. The troopers resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

Around fifty five people were injured in different areas of the city while dozens of protesters were injured in Anantnag where police resorted to cane charge and use teargas shells to disperse the mob. About ten people were also arrested in the town.

At least ten persons, including a trooper were injured in the ding dong battle that followed between civilians and CRPF personnel who even fired some rounds in air to disperse the protestors in most of the city areas.

Protestors also turned violent in some other parts of City outskirts including Batmaloo and Rainawari.Ten people were injured in the pitch battle fought between CRPF personnel and protestors.

Meanwhile about thirty four persons including five policemen were injured indifferent incidents in Srinagar, its outskirts and in Sangrama Baramulla. One civilian and one police head constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police were seriously injured.
