Kuala Lumpur : In an attack right out of a movie, an armed group stormed a Hindu wedding ceremony moments before the bride and bridegroom were about to marry and attacked the guests. But they faced unexpected resistance when a police official, who was a guest, retaliated by firing at them.
As startled guests retreated in fear, a police detective, who was a guest, fired four shots from his service revolver, The Star said.
A group of six, including a woman, armed with chains and parang, a type of Malay machete, Friday ordered the wedding to be stopped and began attacking guests. The detective then fired several shots at them, seriously injuring one of them, The Star said.
The report, however, did not say why the group attacked the wedding party at a sports complex at Sungai Besi, a mining and industrial town in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
The report said the group arrived at 7.50 p.m. just before the wedding ceremony was scheduled to begin at the Desa Tasik Sports Complex, Sungai Besi.
“They began shouting and warning the crowd that the wedding should not be held. Then they started attacking the guests,” said Ahmad Amir Mohd Hashim, Cheras police assistant commissioner.
“A police detective from K.L. Headquarters who was invited as a guest identified himself as a policeman to the group and warned them to stop but they charged at him, forcing him to fire four shots,” he said.
Two members of the group were arrested.
He said six guests suffered minor injuries and the wedding has been postponed indefinitely.
