Residents to ensure police verification of tenents, says police

New Delhi : With intelligence agencies warning that terrorists and anti-socials may use residential premises to hide, Delhi Police has asked residents to ensure police verification of their tenants or face imprisonment.

Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal has asked the Deputy Commissioners of 10 districts in the capital to launch a drive to check whether the verification of the tenants were carried out.

The drive to check the antecedents of thousands of tenants living in the capital have been intensified along with servants’ verification, Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.

Landlords who were found not verified their tenants could be in trouble as they may land in jail for a period of six months under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Over 250 landlords faced the music last year for not getting their tenants verified, an official said.

The tenant verification drive comes in the backdrop of an intensified drive to verify the antecedents of domestic helps following several cases of crime involving servants in the city in recent times.

Delhi Police has completed verification of about 45 per cent of the servants.

“We have completed the verification of 45 per cent of the domestic helps and the process is still on,” Bhagat said.
