Washington : Opium production in Afghanistan soared 17 percent in 2007 under US occupation, says a US report.
The 2008 World Drug Report ranks Afghanistan as top world producer of drugs developed from opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) with 92 per cent.
The US-led invasion ousted the local government in 2001 and drug trafficking and production rocketed, including heroin, that enjoys the largest demand in the illegal market.
A study by the UN Drug and Crime Office (UNDCO) says illegal drug production and trafficking grew for the sixth consecutive year, said a study released by the UN Drug and Crime Office.
UNDCO Executive Director Antonio Costa said the illegal trade yielded some $4 billion in 2007, some 50 percent yearly domestic income and demand surpasses offer by $3 billion tons compared to previous periods, add The Washington Post.
President George W. Bush admitted to its existence but eluded responsibility.
State Department Drug Department Source Susan Pittman alled the levels unacceptable and urged greater commitment from Kabul and the international community.
