“The central authorities have kept a constant and clear policy towards the Dalai Lama,” Xinhua quoted an unnamed government spokesman as saying. “We hope that the Dalai Lama would treasure this opportunity and give positive response to the requirements of the central authorities.” The two sides held their first direct talks on May 4 since riots and anti-government protests erupted in Tibet and neighboring ethnic-Tibetan provinces in March.

China has repeatedly condemned the Dalai Lama’s role in the unrest, but the 72-year-old spiritual leader, who fled into exile in northern India during a failed 1959 uprising, denies being behind the riots.
