The strike was called to protest last month’s decision to hike the petrol price by Rs.2 per litre and diesel by Re.1 per litre.

The strike, with the backing of various industrial bodies of the state including the Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was a total success.

Shopkeepers and business establishments kept their shutters down after Shiv Sena cadres took to the streets in the morning. City buses, school buses and auto rickshaws remained off the road while majority of office-goers remained at home.

Petrol pumps, markets, shopping complexes and Raipur’s lone mall – City Mall-36 – wore a deserted look throughout the day despite heavy police arrangements to deal with strike supporters.
