Suicide explosion in Pakistan kills over 30, wounds dozens

Islamabad : A suicide explosion in a Pakistan’s tribal town, near Afghan border, Sunday killed more than 30 tribesmen and wounded over 50 others, said officials.

A tribal Jirga was underway in Dera Adam Khel tribal town when the explosion took place. It was discussing ways to curb terrorist activities in the region.

According to tribal sources about 1200 tribesmen from five tribes were attending the Jirga when a suicide bomber blew himself up. Sources told KUNA that the explosion killed more than 30 persons including tribal elders and wounded over 50 others.

Sources feared rise in death toll as several wounded were in critical condition.

Military spokesman Ather Abbas confirmed the incident but said had no details.

This was the third consequent bloody suicide explosion in Pakistan’s northern belt since Friday evening. Earlier, a suicide explosion during the funeral prayer of a senior officer killed near 46 persons and wounded over 80 others.

The explosion in Dera Adamkhel took place after forces conducted an operation in the town in January to recover four captured ammunition and arms loaded trucks from local militants. The operation killed over 45 militants.

Security was put on high alert across the volatile tribal belt of Pakistan and paramilitary troopers were deployed.
