New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday assured the Delhi High Court it will complete by May investigations into the alleged Rs.40 billion irregularities in land allotments for cooperative group housing societies (CGHS) in the capital.
CBI counsel told the division bench of Justices Manmohan Sarin and Veena Birbal that the agency has already filed 40 charge-sheets against the accused and will be able to wind up the investigation latest by May.
The CBI is investigating the allegations that some officials in the office of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS) had conspired with private parties to revive defunct societies for land allotment.
Last year the court even threatened the CBI that it would summon its director if the probe was not expedited.
The CBI earlier submitted before the court that the pace of investigations was hampered because of shortage of manpower.
In August 2006, under the direction of the high court, a Special Investigating Team (SIT) was constituted to unravel the scam.
The CBI has already registered 152 cases in connection with the scam and 97 more are likely to be registered soon. Former Registrar of Cooperative Societies N. Diwakar, who surrendered in January 2006, has been named in more than 40 cases.
