Bangalore : The victorious Indian under-19 cricket team will be taken in a procession from the city airport to Chinnaswamy Stadium Tuesday to celebrate their victory over South Africa in the World Cup final in Kuala Lumpur.
The 10-km victory march begins at 4 p.m. The team beat South Africa by 12 runs in a nerve tingling, rain affected final at the Kinrara Academy Oval at Kuala Lumpur Sunday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which has its offices at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, will jointly host a reception for the triumphant team at 6 p.m.
BCCI president Sharad Pawar is likely to present a Rs.1.5 million cheque to each team member for bringing back the cup to India for a second time. India won the cup earlier in 2000.
“The team is landing at HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd) airport at 4 p.m. Tuesday and they will be brought to the KSCA office in a procession. A reception is scheduled at the KSCA at 6 p.m.,” a KSCA spokesperson said.
The junior’s win capped a great Sunday for Indian cricket, when the seniors also beat Australia in the first of three finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the first time in 12 years.
The Indian colts were bundled out for a paltry 159 runs in 45.5 overs but their bowlers atoned for the debacle. Double strikes by Ajitesh Argal saw the South Africans struggling at 11 for three by the eighth over. He was also adjudged the man of the match for his clinical bowling of two for seven from his five overs.
In the eighth over, the rain gods came down heavily and forced the umpires to give South Africa a target of 116 runs from 25 overs in accordance with the Duckworth Lewis Method.
After the rain interruption, the Indian bowlers came out firing all cylinders and held their nerves as they saw the South African batting line-up fall like a pack of cards.
In the last over, South Africa needed 19 runs but some tight bowling by Siddarth Kaul saved the day for India.
