New Delhi : By the calendar, summer in Delhi is yet some weeks away. But a casual short walk in the city Monday – like Sunday or a day earlier – was enough to draw beads of perspiration from anyone who braved the sharp afternoon sun, and feel summer was here.
Monday was yet another warm, sunny day in the capital, the temperature touching a high of nearly 33 degrees Celsius – seven notches above what is normal for this time of the year, a short-lived spring time.
Even the minimum temperature rose to its highest in nearly three months at 16 degrees Celsius.
The temperatures across the northern plains remained at least 6-8 degrees Celsius above normal. The Met Office says that the current trend would continue for the next couple of days till Wednesday.
Even the central plains comprising Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidharba saw temperatures 4-5 degrees above normal levels.
The northern chill in Jammu and Kashmir also took a beating, as the day’s high temperature in capital Srinagar was nearly 20 degrees Celsius, a whopping eight degrees above normal, which is certain to melt all the snows of winter and cause a flooding of the Valley.
The weather office has forecast rain or thundershower for West Bengal, Sikkim, northeastern states and coasts of south peninsula for the next 4-5 days till Friday. The weather in rest of the country would remain generally dry.
The following were the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Monday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
