An order to this effect was issued by Governor T.V. Rajeshwar Tuesday.

Chief Minister Mayawati has renamed the university, the first medical university in the state, as Chhattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU).

Known as a pioneer in paediatric surgery in Uttar Pradesh, Gopal is currently head of the department of Paediatric Surgery at the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) Medical College.

Gopal will replace S.K. Agarwal, who had been acting vice chancellor for almost two years since the last incumbent Mahendra Bhandari was removed for allegedly committing grave irregularities.

According to a Raj Bhawan spokesman, “Dr. Gopal will formally assume the new office on March 7.”
