India to participate in major international conference on women

Brussels : More than 50 international women leaders will meet in Brussels on Thursday, 6 March, to discuss the twin themes of security and women’s empowerment.

The one-day event, hosted by EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, is organized to coincide with International Women’s Day on 8 March.

From India, Meira Kumar, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment is expected to address the conference which is titled “Women: stabilising an insecure world.”.

Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Former President of Sri Lanka, and foreign minister of Nepal Sahana Pradhan are among other participants from South Asia.

“Women are often the first to suffer when human security is threatened, whether by war, poverty, or natural disasters. We must ensure that we fully address the impact on women of new threats to security like climate change and fundamentalism”, said Ferrero-Waldner in a statement here Tuesday.
