Pakistan arrests 3-would be suicide bombers: police

Lahore : Security agencies arrested three persons in Lahore and foiled terrorist attacks, the city police chief said.

The arrests came two days after the twin suicide attacks in the Naval War College in Lahore which killing five people and injuring over 20.

The suspected suicide bombers were arrested as they arrived in the city from tribal area in a bus, Lahore police chief Malik Iqbal told a news conference.

He said that 50-kilograms of explosives, 4 suicide jackets, electric detonators, chemicals and explosives umbrella were recovered from the possession of the suspects.

The police officer identified the would-be bombers as Abdul Majid, Qamar Saleem and Nadeem Shehzad, who all belong to different parts of Punjab province.

Iqbal said that the suspects belong to a banned militant group, but he did not mention name of the group.

He said the bombers disclosed during the investigations that they were planning to target prominent personalities and key installations in Lahore.

“We have succeeded in averting killing of precious lives,” the police chief said.

He said that the suspects were arrested on a tip at the entry point of Lahore as they arrived in the city by bus.

“The arrested terrorists are being questioned about their plans,” Iqbal said.

He said that the intelligence agencies shared information with the police and the arrests were made as a result of cooperation between the law enforcement agencies.

The police also showed to journalists the seized suicide jackets and other materials.
